What's in my Project? adoc Studio File Structure Explained

adoc Studio relies entirely on standards. That’s why you don’t have to worry about losing your content even after your subscription ends.

Summary:
Your adoc Studio project consists of .adoc files (plain UTF-8 text files), folders, and a .adocproject file. Even after your subscription ends, you can continue to use all .adoc files without any restrictions; only the .adocproject file is then limited to read-only access. You always keep full control over your texts – there is no “lock-in” due to the subscription.

All file formats in detail

Let's take a look at the basic structure using a new project as an example. Open adoc Studio and select “File > New > Project” from the menu. You now have an empty project. Save it to your desktop. A folder with the extension “.ads” will appear there. This is your new adoc Studio project.

.adoc Files

A first .adoc file is already included in this project. A double-click is enough to open it directly in adoc Studio. Other programs are also compatible, for example BBEdit, TextEditor, or any IDE (e.g. VS Code).

Example of a .adoc file

AsciiDoc itself is an open-source markup language. Any software that supports plain-text-based formats can open these files. Here is a selection of different programs that support AsciiDoc. With them, you can generate a preview of the document, but you will then need to start the output via the terminal.

In addition to .adoc files, AsciiDoc projects can be supplemented with other files. To do this, click the ➕ icon in the adoc Studio sidebar:

Composite documents

Composite documents store your text in multiple chapters in one folder. Every chapter is an individual .adoc file within the folder. Again, we only use standard formats so that no lock-in occurs.

Folders

Folders in adoc Studio are completely normal folders that you can also open outside of the program.

Media folder

Images, videos, and audio files are stored in a folder. You retain these files. Everything remains accessible, even after your subscription ends.

This is what your project could now look like – folders, texts, and the project file

Why should you still use adoc Studio?

  1. No terminal: You do not need to enter terminal commands. adoc Studio handles the output directly in the app.

  2. Simplified CSS design: You can use a single stylesheet for both HTML and PDF. No more endless scripts.

  3. Quick to learn: The integrated adoc Coach helps you quickly learn the AsciiDoc syntax. It shows you explanations and suggestions right at the cursor.

adoc Studio is available for Mac, iPad, and iPhone. The bundle costs 9.99 € per month or 99.99 € per year.
