Setting Up Languages in the Project

If you want to maintain your documents in multiple languages, first set up the languages in the project settings. adoc Studio supports you with a clear language management system.

Define the available languages for your project in the project settings +; or by right-clicking on the sidebar via Add Language  Document Languages…. Then you can assign languages to individual files.

Translating Files

To assign a language to a file, use the context menu in the project navigator:

  1. Right-click on the desired file

  2. Select Add Language  a language

  3. The file now appears with an arrow – expand it to see all language versions

With Add Language  another language, you add more language versions. The menu only shows languages that are defined in the project and not yet assigned to the file.

Languages in the Toolbar

In addition to the project navigator, you’ll find the language selection in the toolbar. There you can see:

  • The document name

  • The file you’re currently working on

  • The current language

  • The section at the cursor position

This allows you to quickly switch between language versions of a file.

Technical Background

When you assign languages to a file, the content is transferred to the first language. Therefore, we recommend choosing the language in which your document is already written as the first language.

In the file system, translated files are marked with a language code:

  • Manual.adoc becomes Manual.de.adoc (German)

  • and Manual.en.adoc (English)

In adoc Studio, these files are displayed as a clear file tree.

Languages apply not only to .adoc files but to all project content. This allows you to use different images or media for each language.
Files without language assignment are used in all languages. More details can be found in the Manual.
